Impacted

Two hearts nestled comfortably together.
Then, cutting up through bone and skin,
I lodged my own between the two.
I left it growing in sideways—
Nuzzling against one,
Grinding its crooked veins into the other.
Each heart began a dull, throbbing beat
that reached its way up through clenched teeth to aching minds.

Lightheaded and weary,
I breathed in, and laughed in pain until I fell asleep.

With a sharp crack,
Reality awoke me with its fist to my jaw,
To alert me to the abscess of my heart's absence.

I inhaled shards into the bare rawness,
And poured in endorphin's nepenthe.

I am drunk on glorious pain,
Stumbling, stitching a dance along the oxycontinuum
Of this sore, sweet, cut to the bone.

I don't know where my heart is,
But my head is up in the clouds.
A poem about my life, recently.

The allegory of this poem is inspired by my best friend's recent adventures with wisdom teeth and their necessary removal.

I started this poem a while ago and set it aside, frustrated. I finally finished it. I should probably sleep, now. Way past my bed time. :P

I can't help it if creativity strikes at the worst times...

I'm just thankful for this, because I haven't written a finished poem in ages...
