Halo 3 Jackal Cosplay by randomflyingpigeons Halo 3 Jackal Cosplay by randomflyingpigeons
Here's a link to the three professional shots side by side: [link]

Work in progress compilation at youtube: [link]

For anyone who does not know what a Jackal is, here is their wiki: [link]

I don't know where I got the name "Kek" from. According to the halo wiki, however, the name is appropriate for their language. And it kept popping into my head, so *shrugs*

Anyway, this is my jackal costume which took about 8 months to make. I finally finished this beast, and displayed it at Anime Central in Rosemont, Illinois. Sadly, I did not win any contests, but I had a lot of people boost my ego with compliments. I also had one person go, "JACKAL! It's a JACKAL! A JACKAL! Is it a JACKAL? JACKAL!" which made my day.

The armor is made out of cardboard sealed with paper tape. The skin is fabric, airbrushed for detail and with some areas speckled with liquid latex. The mask is a cardboard base with clay and liquid latex. The stilts have a wooden base and are cardboard, fabric and stuffing.

The jaw is hinged to move with my mouth, and I have digitigrade stilts to make my legs look more jackal-like. The stilts' toes bend when I walk. Also, the shield lights up with LEDs. I have a plasma pistol which wasn't included in most shots as I did not make it, but I did detail it to look more old and worn. His armor is detailed to look scratched, rusted, covered in dirt and grime. He also has some scars on his arms, a massive bullet wound in one shoulder, and a slash on the side of his head.

It would also be nice if the shield could retract to simulate the shield getting overheated when exposed to a melee attack, although that would probably be pretty tricky to make.

this is amazing. I didn't think anyone would pull it off or even attempt it, but this is fantastic.

They were a bit blurry, but you could see through them. The next costume I make will have a different setup.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. :)

Forerunner would be pretty interesting, I just wish that there were better reference pics of their armor out there. For now, I'm going to focus on the Hunter I'm intending on making. Still in the planning/prototype stages and it's slow going. But it should be pretty rad.

I'll be posting updates about the Hunter (when I actually start making progress >.> ) periodically.

I've seen the concept art, but I'm not confident enough to work of just that. I try and make my costumes as accurate as I possibly can.

seen a video of a 405th user making one. looked nice in the end...

Unfortunately I am not skilled enough to make costumes that would be durable enough for someone else to wear, nor do I know how to size things properly. :(

how did you make the shield ?

I took the plastic backing from a 3-foot diameter round security mirror and cut the slots on the sides. A handle was bolted with two large bolts/washers into the center. For the rays/plasma-looking details I painted on iridescent pigment with mod podge as a base, and then I had to hand draw on the little blue polygons all over the shield. The tiny polygons were made with metallic acrylic ink. I think I used one other time of medium for a different pattern on the shield but I can't remember what I used. It may have been copic airbrush.

Finally I installed some blue LEDs which were in an array that a friend of mine created who is more proficient in electronics. I tried various methods to maximize the distance that the light covered the shield, but ultimately it was only partly successful.

Other than that, I made the effort of holding onto the handle of the shield a lot easier because there is an arm-guard-ish piece of metal attached to the handle. This creates a base that I can rest my arm on, and strap my arm to with velcro straps. It makes carrying the shield a lot easier. It's pretty lightweight but when wearing gloves it can be tricky to handle over a long period of time.

Hope that helps!

I am a huge fan of Halo and this is amazing
how ever it could use some work on the face of the mask (and the mask in general) and a tiny amount work on the body, but the shield and the armor look great

You know those security mirrors they have in stores and underground parking lots? It's made from one of those, minus the mirror part. It's the plastic backing. It's got a metal handle double-bolted onto the center, and the plastic was cut to look like the shield.

I put in some LEDs to the best of my electronically-challenged ability and airbrushed on some colors. I hand-painted on all the tiny little polygons.

...I think that's about it.

I love it dude! but I think the shield is abit to small,I thought it encompassed their entire body, just a thought, but the costume itself is perfect, this makes me want to cosplay as a grunt! And then I'll find you and we'll battle!

I scaled the shield pretty well, I think, given that when I crouch my body properly like a jackal it conceals my body. I based this off of reference pics. Any larger and it would have looked unbalanced.

But I am glad you like it. :) I hope you do make a grunt costume, I would love to see it.

Then Maybe it was just me after all, I saw your grunt costume too, very cool, I like how you made the life support on the grunt, that must have been really hard, but yeah I think I will make a grunt costume, I know afew people who are willing to help me make it.
