I finished this sometime early last year, but have finally gotten around to posting it. (Now that I have a decent camera, it was a whole lot easier.)
This started off as an old East German button-up shirt I got at a resale shop called Ragstock. (<3) I cut out parts of the sleeves without much measuring (aside from marking it with chalk and making sure both sides were identical) because I tend to do things without prior planning. (also I am a noob at sewing.) I then filled in the holes with mesh from a camouflage bag and added eyelets along the elbow areas.
I got a chain from home depot and later scrapped an idea for another chain. I added those fabric strappy-doo things on the arms (that was a bitch!) and put little eylets in them.
There is contrasting blue thread where things were sewn, the idea of which was inspired by Tripp pants, and I added a Nine Inch Nails patch I got from the Year Zero album.
Finally I painted it, which was the most fun part.
This coat represents my Four Major Avatars: Wrath, Lateo, Eucrasia and Dyscrasia. They are in the middle. Around them is a transmutation-circle-inspired...um. Circle. With symbols and Latin and all kinds of shit. I don't remember what half of it stands for, but I do have it written down somewhere. I'm just too lazy to look it all up again. But believe me, there was careful design and planning and meaning behind every inch of this painting.
The Latin I looked up on Wikipedia's helpful "List of Latin Phrases." So it's kind of cheating but whatever. All of those sayings do fit me. This coat is meant to represent me--who I am as a person, an artist, a mind, a being, whatever.
Towards the bottom is: Sign for Libra Caduceus Mayan Bat Native American Crow Ankh and Anti-Ankh Some little floaty wills o' the wisp The Kali Yantra
Around the transmutation-esque circles is some kind of Pagan writing. I forget what it is. I'm not a Pagan, I just liked how it looked. (this is the only thing on my jacket that has no significance behind the aesthetic choice...) But I do remember what it says: Starting from the top, going clockwise--
The Abomination RFP The Messenjah The Great Destroyer The Avatar Queen
So yeah. And the transmutation circle thing has a lot of symbolism behind my Four Major Avatars, the elements, cardinal directions, humors, seasons and alchemical symbols that represent/are associated with those Four. The final representation is that of The Void, or myself.
Finally I painted circuit board contacty line things all over the jacket.
It's so weird how my own personal symbolism also coincidentally matches my storyline, and that of my boyfriend's, who has a character in my image. O_O The universe is strange like that, I guess.
The title alone made me click on this, but the coat is also awesome. The detail work on the painting is what makes it (IMO, of course), you could look at it for a long time without seeing all the details you've put in. My only quibble would be I'm not 100% sold on the mesh arms - it looks great from the back but a bit bare from the front.

Well, you said you wanted advanced critique so I figured you wouldn't cry if I said what I thought. Besides, you've clearly put so much work into it that just posting "nice" would seem a bit of a cop out.

This newsletter was "born" back in March 2007, from a conversation between ~Lareth and =FrozenStarRo, who with the help of their friends *Iardacil and *Sylwiaa , wanted to make something to promote known and unknown photomanipulators alike here on DeviantArt. As of September 2009 =ImaginaryRosse joined the project and will be helping us out with the weekly choices. While things have changed over time, the essence of the newsletter is still the same.
